Absolutely great food if you can get served. Second time in a month that our table of 4 and seven waited over 20 minutes. The first time we stayed, the second time we walked out after repeatedly asking for service. Didn’t get water, chips, NOTHING .Again, great food, lousy service
Incredible, Fresh, True flavor, YUMMmmmm ! Make it a point to go to San Marcos and put a bit of Mexico in you ! Well worth the trip.
Had lunch here with friends on a recent Saturday afternoon. They’ve recently remodeled - earlier reviews stated that it is hidden at the back of a Mexican grocery, which is still mostly true, but the restaurant and bar has been expanded a great deal. The decor is similar to other Mexican restaurant fare you’ll find in Toledo, but there’s a beautiful (and poignant) mural on the wall depicting conquistadors and the indigenous people of Mexico.
We had a torta with barbacoa (if you like sandwiches, get this - it’s large, inexpensive, and delicious) and a beef chimichanga. Both were excellent, especially with a bottle of Coke (imported from Mexico, no less, sweetened with cane sugar).
If you haven’t visited San Marcos yet, remedy that soon.
I moved from Southern California to Toledo 2 months ago. In my quest to find “real” mexican food I have been very disappointed by the many suggestions of restaurants that claim to be “authentic”. Forgive me for being a Southern CA. Mexican food snob… but none of the restaurants in Toledo taste like real Mexican… they don’t even come close… THAT IS UNTIL I HAPPENED UPON SAN MARCOS!!! I’m on record saying this is the only authentic mexican food in Toledo… PERIOD! It was just about the only place that knew what Carne Asada was… and knew how to cook it. This Southern California boy just found his new home away from home.
In the back of this Mexican grocery store is one of the BEST hidden jewels in Toledo. You would never know it was there if it weren’t for great friends and locals to show you the way.
Grab a bottle of Coka-Cola (yes a bottle) and sit down at the taco bar in the back. The menu is sparse but its the staples that make it great. Grab a couple beef (steak) tacos and a chicken quesadilla and enjoy the great taste of seasoned beef, grilled chicken, avocado and cilantro. The cooks prepare everything right in front of you (think sushi bar) and you are always greeted with a smile, from the cooks, wait staff and even the other patrons.
Sure there are a ton of Mexican restaurants in Toledo, places to go drink margaritas and get the combo platter, but San Marcos is in a league of it’s own. Go there for lunch and bring a friend but remember that this is more like a bar so conversations between more than three people can get tough.
Go, eat, enjoy!
